THERE is no space for the boredom blues at Iziko Museums of South Africa. Iziko’s holiday programme is bursting with exciting activities for all ages. The museums provide enthralling experiences for all.
Do you always feel the pull of the past? Do you always interrupt stories with “But why?” Are you always the first one to strike up a conversation and make new friends?
Space cadets; artists and explorers dig in, uncover our heritage and visit the museums this holiday. Events take place at the Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome; Slave Lodge Museum, South African Museum, as well as the Iziko South African National Gallery.

Sharpen Your Creative Edge – 26 June
Sharpen the young ones’ creative edge with art making at the Iziko South African National Gallery. It starts off as a gallery hunt, and ends in an activity where the participants (7 to 15 years) get to indulge their imagination by making their own art. It runs from 09.30 to noon, on 26th June.
Particularly peculiar –27th June, from 10.00 to 11.30,
“Oh, wow! I didn’t know that.” Increase your child’s wonder of the natural world as they ponder the life of a particularly peculiar bird – the penguin. Discover the Icy World of Penguins runs on 27th June, from 10.00 to 11.30, at Iziko South African Museum. Little ones (5 to 11 years) get the benefit of fact and fun while learning about the fascinating life of this flightless bird – all done through storytelling and arts and crafts.

For a more serious interface with Iziko, the Slave Lodge plays host to a tour, Slave Origins – Cultural EchoesExhibition. It is a creative workshop in which participants (5 years and up) will select objects to be examined through collage artmaking processes. It runs from 09.30 until noon on 27th June.
Hands-on Tie-dye Fun
Explore cloth and the intimate link it shares with culture with a Tie-dye Fun Hands-on Workshop, running at the Slave Lodge on 11th July, from 09.30 ‘til noon (5 years and up). Experience organic and geometric tie-dye in the Slave Lodge and courtyard, this after a guided tour of the textile exhibition, The isishweshwe story: material women?Bring along a plain white T-shirt to decorate. Clay in your hands
Make a turn at the Slave Lodge and explore the connection of Africa’s clay and people. On 11 July from 09.30 ‘til noon, Iziko’s Slave Lodge will host the African Vessel Clay Workshop, drawing inspiration from the Slave Lodge’s current exhibition From African Earth: Celebrating our African Vessel Heritage. After the exhibit, participants (5 years and up) will each receive clay, and a coil method of creating a pot will be demonstrated, followed by heaps of fun making their own African vessels.
Career Connections – Increase your knowledge vault
Iziko Museums’ three-day career guidance experience might have the answers for you. This is open to Grade 9-12 learners keen to explore the unique and rewarding career options available within Iziko museums.
This ideal job shadowing opportunity takes place from 9-11 July, from 09.30 to 14.30, at the Iziko South African Museum, Slave Lodge, and South African National Gallery. Eager learners are to email kmillward@iziko.org.zaby 22 June. They are to include their full name school, grade and age, as well as a short motivation about why they would like to attend.
The programme only has space for 60 learners.
