Iziko Museums of South Africa will host several ICA Live Art festival 2018 events, on the 6th, 7th and 12th September 2018. The partnership with the Institute for Creative Arts (ICA) will create opportunities of exploration to the museums. This interdisciplinary festival is designed to challenge and extend the public’s experience of live art in a non-commercial environment and render the work of visual and performing artists more accessible.
The Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG) will be home to an array of provocative visual performances on Thursday, 6 September at 6pm, 6:30pm and 7pm. The running order is as follows:
‘In these streets’, by Wezile Mgibe, forms part of a series of ongoing works around post-apartheid trauma. Mgibe is an emerging art practitioner, with a background in musical theatre, who uses performance and visual arts to make a statement about social change. He is inspired by the surroundings he grew up in, and by art as a way to interrogate system, site and culture. ‘In these streets’ starts at 6pm.
Siwa Mgoboza and Nobukho Ngaba’s ‘Sobabini’ (‘The two of us’),
Siwa Mgoboza uses shweshwe fabric to explore hybrid identity in contemporary South Africa. Nobukho Nqaba works with the personal narrative, using objects and symbolism to deconstruct personal identity. In ‘Sobabini’ (‘The two of us’), they explore artistic oeuvres through conversations in movement, unravelling and transcending the boundaries of individual identity. The show is set to begin at 6:30pm.
‘Ingoma Ka Tiyo Soga’ by Sikhumbuzo Mkandula and Mthwakazi, multi-media performance accompanied by a video installation, explores how music composed by Tiyo Soga 160 years ago continues to form part of our everyday, as an oral repertoire that thrives within our collective memory in many South African churches and schools. Ingoma Ka Soga follows ‘In these streets’ and ‘Sobabini’ at 7pm and concludes at 8pm
Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome & Iziko Slave Lodge – Friday 7 September 2018 hosts ‘Things we lost in the Rainbow’from 7pm until 9pm.
‘Things we lost in the Rainbow’ by Athi-Patra Ruga is an expansive processional performance, starting at the Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome at 7pm. The work explores the body in relation to sensuality, culture, and ideology, looking back on his legacy through numerous avatars and video projections. The piece moves to the Iziko Slave Lodge at 7:45pm, with a sound and video installation, and finally concludes at Cape Town train station between 8:30 and 9pm. Iziko South African Museum plays host to ‘Grey, Green, Gold and (Red)’on 12 September6pm to 7pm.
Grey, Green, Gold and (Red), is a performance lecture by Uriel Orlow, themed around the garden Nelson Mandela and his fellow inmates planted on Robben Island. Orlow considers plants as both witnesses and actors in history and looks to the botanical world as a stage for politics at large. His work is concerned with special manifestations of memory; blind spots of representation and forms of haunting.
The ICA festival takes place at various city locations from 1-16 September 2018. The Festival will be hosted at the University of Cape Town’s Little Theatre Complex, Iziko Museums of South Africa, and in various spaces in the city centre, such as the Cape Town Station, the Company’s Garden.
This performance platforms feature a prodigious assembly of artists such as: Wezile Mgibe, Siwa Mgoboza and Nobukho Ngaba, Mamela Nyamza, Toni Stuart, Athi-Patra Ruga, Nelisiwe Xaba, FAKA, Sello Pesa, John Nankin, Ilze Wolff, Theo Herbst and Donna Kukama among others. The primary thrust of these artists is to explore new forms, break boundaries, flout aesthetic conventions, tackle controversy, confront audiences and experiment with perceptions.
The festival curatorial team consists of curator Jay Pather and co-curators Nomusa Makhubu, Nkule Mabaso and James Macdonald. Entry to all shows is free, but booking is essential. RSVP to ica@uct.ac.za .
