Iziko Museums of South Africa launched a virtual online tour of the exhibition Tata Madiba: Father of our democracy, father of our nation on Monday, 30 November 2020. The 360-degree virtual experience is a unique and exciting online feature that provides visitors with the opportunity to ‘see’ interesting objects related to Mandela’s life and culture, and the anti-apartheid movement, as computerized, three-dimensional models.
As its central piece, Tata Madiba includes the iMadiba sculpture – a participatory artwork conceptualized and created by South African artist and photographer, Erhardt Thiel. The artwork is endorsed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and aims to facilitate dialogue, memory, reflection and forward-thinking. The virtual online Tata Madiba exhibition further offers a space for intercultural and community dialogue – where podcasts are available to listen to and encourages engagement with the speakers.
The themes discussed in the podcasts are “What makes a good leader?” with Lerato Kossie (Sikunye Ne Ndalo Pty Ltd) and Samantha Richmond (University of Cape Town); “The Long Walk to Freedom for Women and Girls in South Africa” with Rosie Motene (actor, author and activist), Brian Petersen (activist and community leader) and Lynn-Joy Isaacs (South African Faith and Family Institute); and lastly, “The time is ripe for Afro-centric solutions” with Dr Ruben Richards (Ruben Richards Foundation) and Brent Lindeque (Good Things Guy blogger). This impressive line-up includes speakers from different backgrounds, each with their own inspiring stories and how Mandela influenced them through his leadership and legacy – a true reflection of ubuntu.
Considered to be one of the greatest leaders in the world, Tata Madiba also features the many species named after Mandela. Visitors can also virtually ‘access’ display cases to explore the interesting natural history objects – many of which Mandela and is fellow prisoners may have encountered on Robben Island. An interactive map further provides a unique perspective to the socio-economic landscape of South Africa.
The exhibition is of great value in its social and educational importance. It was designed to stimulate conversation about Nelson Mandela’s life, struggles and the extraordinary journey that led to the birth of democracy in South Africa. Since 2018, the upgraded exhibition, Tata Madiba: Father of our democracy, father of our nation on show at the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town has enjoyed many visitors from far and wide.
We celebrate this great statesman and the Father of our Nation, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. We hope to inspire and educate the world through this virtual online tour.
