Examining the techniques of paintings in the Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG) permanent collection presents a unique and exciting opportunity to bring together conservation, art, science and technical art history. Using the latest non-invasive technology now available at ISANG, 600 paintings were studied and photographically documented in four different ways. These revealed aspects of surface details, as well as those hidden beneath the painted layers. Highlights and new insights from this extensive study are presented here, thereby also providing a glimpse behind the scenes at ISANG.

This is the first resource book that documents and illustrates a large number of paintings in the ISANG collection. It provides valuable evidence of artists’ methods and techniques; it facilitates access to details of the paintings for research and creates opportunities for discourse and collaborations.

This initiative, including the equipment acquired, would not have been possible without the generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This support has significantly increased the capacity for research at ISANG and will open doors to a greater community of scholars interested in the artists and paintings in the ISANG permanent collection.

The book is available at Iziko South African National Gallery and select book stores from the 5th November 2020. It retails for R650 a copy, and is available to students (with a valid student card) at R520.

This is a non-profit initiative and proceeds will go towards an Iziko South African National Gallery Conservation initiative.
