The upsurge of COVID-19 infections in the Western Cape necessitates the implementation of precautionary safety measures. The health and safety of our staff and visitors are of utmost importance. Subsequently, the Iziko Museums of South Africa’s Council has made the decision to institute staggered timed-access visiting hours for some Iziko Museums sites. 

Museums will be open from 10h00 until 14h30 and will have the specified number of timed entry sessions, with sanitising periods in between. Wearing a mask correctly is compulsory. Visitors will be required to complete a screening questionnaire and have their temperatures checked.  The following sites will be opened as follows:



Operating Hours

Slave Lodge

Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10:00 – 14:30

90-minute visiting session

Intersperse with sanitation sessions.


Session 1: 10:00 – 11:30

Session 2: 12:30 – 14:00


Number of visitors limited.

South African National Gallery

Tuesdays – Sundays from

10:00 – 14:30




South African Museum



Limited seats available per show.

Shows are interspersed with sanitation sessions.

No Planetarium shows on

1 January 2021.


1st Show: 10:30 – 11:30

2nd Show: 12:00 – 13:00

3rd Show: 13:30 – 14:30

Bo-Kaap Museum

Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10:00 – 14:30

60-minute visiting sessions

Intersperse with sanitation sessions.


Session 1- 10:00 until 11:00

Session 2- 11:15 until 12:15

Session 3- 12:30 until 13:30

Session 4- 13:45 until 14:30

Closing early at 15:00 on 31 December, last ticket sales at 15:00.

Castle of Good Hope

Limited number of visitors allowed in Iziko Museums’ spaces

Iziko libraries and collections access by appointment only, contact Ms Baheya Hardy via email at Natural History Library temporarily closed.


The closure of the following museums will enable Iziko to rotate certain staff members who are serving the public at the Iziko sites that are open to the public: 

  • Rust en Vreugd
  • Bertram House
  • Koopmans-De Wet
  • Old Townhouse

Bertram House and the Old Town House (Michaelis Collection) are closed to the public due to pending renovations.
