Free Entrance on Heritage Day

Join us throughout as we celebrate South Africa’s diverse heritage in a series of exciting events and exhibitions on Heritage Day Saturday, 24 September 2022.

*Free entry excludes Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome, as well as museums closed for repairs and renovations.

  All Day Visual depiction of past environment C Hunter paintings commissioned by the researchers based on the palaeontological evidence.  The aim is to give audiences a lasting image of past environment and improve their understanding through visual depiction.    Iziko Online

9:00 – 15:00 National Marine species display of the Marine Biology – poster exhibition   ISAM 
        9h00-15h00 The evolutionary process of facial bones in different animals. (Karoo Paleontological Collection). An excellent display highlighting how these bones have evolved in different animals, from a common ancestor.  The Gathering space, ISAM 
South Africa’s treasures: Invertebrate Paleontological and Geological Collection displays of rocks, minerals, and shells.  
English & Indigenous languages. Visitors will be asked to write down, next to the English insect’s common name, the common insect names in their native tongue. This list would be documented for possible social media information sharing post the event. 
Reptiles and amphibians: An exciting display of reptiles and amphibians highlighting their differences e.g. in their physical attributes, their behaviour towards the water but also their similarities 
10h00-12h00 Come colour with us. Each toddler has an opportunity to colour in a printed copy of the South African flag.   The Gathering space, ISAM 
We love bees! Showcasing ways to keep bees buzzing. In addition, visitors have an opportunity to try a small sample of raw honey and honeycomb. 
Modern Entomophagy: Edible insects have been consumed by humans for many years and yet are still considered taboo to many. We would like to provide visitors with an opportunity to try commercial edible insect species, in our effort to promote sustainable eating. 
10:00 – 14:00 The Coat of Arms of South Africa is the main heraldic insignia of South Africa. The present coat of arms was introduced on Freedom Day 27 April 2000 and was designed by Mr Iaan Bekker. It replaced an earlier national arm, which had been in use since 1910.Participants will be taken through the Rock Art display to explore and discuss significance and symbolism behind our coat of arms.   Discovery Room, ISAM    
10:00-11:00 Drumming Session – with Bevil Spence   Rock Art Gallery, ISAM 
10h00-15h00 Archaeology Display Table:  See and explore a selection of million-year-old stone tools.   Stone Bones (4th Floor), ISAM 
10h00-14h00 Archaeology Mock Dig: Be an archaeologist and excavate cool stone tools, animal bones and seashells.  
14h00 – 15h00 Ask an Archaeologist Questions: Would you like to be an archaeologist and know what it takes to become one. Well, this is your chance to meet real life archaeologists and ask them all sorts of questions.   
11:00-11:30 Rainbow Academy is a non-profit School of Performing Arts and Business that started in June 2010 at Mandela Rhodes Place, Cape Town. The aim of the school is to nurture talent, educate and address youth unemployment in the Performing Arts and Creative Industries.  On this day they will be rendering a performative piece that reflect on our heritage.   Whale Well, ISAM 
11:00 – 11:30    Exhibition walkabout: Join Mining/Earth-artist, Jeannette Unite for a walkabout of PLOT: CRITICAL ZONES A trans-disciplinary installation interrogating human beings’ relationship with minerals that are at the heart of mining, industrialisation, manufacture, and consumption.    PLOT Exhibition Hall, ISAM

FEES INCREASE
UPDATE

Iziko Museums of South Africa will increase entry fees to all Iziko Museums for the first time in a decade, effective 1 April 2023. The new fees schedule was developed after undertaking a benchmarking assessment of local, regional, and national cultural/heritage attractions. The new entrance fees take our communities and visitors into consideration and remains a unique value-for money cultural and edutainment offering in Cape Town.
