COLLECTIONS & DIGITISATION DEPARTMENT

 

COLLECTIONS MANAGER NATURAL HISTORY CENOZOIC PALAEONTOLOGY

Basic Salary Range: R315 600 – R426 948 per annum, plus benefits

Requirements: M.Sc. in Zoology or similar Proven relevant experience working in a museum as an Assistant Collections Manager or similar with a demonstrated track record of competence and success Proven experience in the management of all facets of natural history collection including specimen preparation, accessioning of specimens, maintenance of collections, reorganising of collections, conservation and loans Specialist knowledge of Cenozoic palaeontology and taphonomy collections Proven academic research and writing ability In depth collections management and digitisation knowledge Computer literacy in MS Office Valid driver’s licence.

Key Responsibilities include: Planning and implementing a long-term project for the full digitisation of Cenozoic Palaeontology and Taphonomy collections, including entering metadata for each accessioned object into the Specify database Assisting with the development of educational content for Specify Assisting with the overall management of the Specify database system and participating in projects and meetings for the development of Specify Ensuring that storerooms for Cenozoic Palaeontology and Taphonomy collections are maintained and monitored Managing loans in the designated collections according to specifications in the Collections Policy and the Collections Procedures Manual Participating in research field trips as required but not to the detriment of essential collection duties Ensuring that specimens on exhibitions from designated collections are properly preserved and protected Assisting with planning and research for exhibitions.

Competencies Required: Ability to record information accuratelyAbility to work in a team and independently Knowledge of the procurement process Comprehensive knowledge of natural history collections Excellent English written verbal and communication skills Ability to manage a team Project management skills Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders.

 

COLLECTIONS MANAGER NATURAL HISTORY KAROO PALAEONTOLOGY

Basic Salary Range: R315 600 – R426 948 per annum, plus benefits

Requirements: B.Sc. in Zoology or Similar proven relevant experience working in a museum as an Assistant Collections Manager or similar with a demonstrated track record of competence and success Proven experience in the management of all facets of natural history collection including specimen preparation, accessioning of specimens, maintenance of collections, reorganising of collections, conservation and loans Specialist knowledge of Karoo palaeontology collections Proven academic research and writing ability In depth collections management and digitisation knowledge Computer literacy in MS Office Valid driver’s licence.

Key Responsibilities include: Planning and implementing a long-term project for the full digitization of Karoo Palaeontology and collections, including entering of metadata for each accessioned object into the Specify database, guiding and participating in the photography of all collection objects, incorporation into Specify Planning and implementing a project for the reconciliation of collection objects in the Karoo Palaeontology collections with the information recorded on Specify involving a full stock take of these collections Assisting with developing educational content for Specify Safe storage and display of collections to ensure that the collections are stored under safe conditions, for example, temperature control, proper storage conditions, proper documentation and labelling of collections Ensuring that storerooms for Karoo Palaeontology collections are maintained and monitored Managing loans in the designated collections according to specifications in the Collections Policy and the Collections Procedures Manual Participating in research field trips as required but not to the detriment of essential collections duties Ensuring that specimens on exhibitions from designated collections are properly preserved and protected Assisting with planning and research for exhibitions

RESEARCH & EXHIBITIONS DEPARTMENT

 

CURATOR INVERTEBRATE PALAEONTOLOGY AND GEOLOGY

Basic Salary Range: R392 280 – R530 760 per annum, plus benefits

Requirements: Master’s degree in Biodiversity / Palaeontology / Geology / Earth Sciences Proven relevant experience working in a museum preferably as a curator with a demonstrated track record of competence and success Research experience in a biodiversity-related field including integrated taxonomy Proven academic research and writing ability Computer literacy in MS Office Valid driver’s licence.

Key Responsibilities include: Assist in the identification of conservation requirements timeously and ensuring that these are addressed Conducting fieldwork to ensure the strategic acquisition of specimens Assessing specimens for inclusion in the Invertebrate Palaeontology and Geology collections Preparing and accessioning specimens into the Invertebrate Palaeontology and Geology collections Preparing fundraising proposals and ensure of stewardship of NH unit grant agreements Contributing to the development and implementation of Iziko’s over-arching exhibition strategy to ensure optimal educational heritage and societal benefits Undertake research intended for the purpose of exhibition development Developing exhibition concepts, proposals and budgets in collaboration with other curators and exhibition designers Developing script/ text for exhibitions in consultation with exhibition information designers Contributing proactively to education and public programmes as required.

Competencies Required: Excellent English written verbal and communication skills Report-writing skills Ability to organise, present and communicate messages effectively through design Knowledge of financial management and fundraising Ability to plan, manage and implement projects Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders.

 

CURATOR TERRESTRIAL VERTEBRATES

Basic Salary Range: R392 280 – R530 760 per annum, plus benefits

Requirements: Master’s Degree in Biodiversity / Biodiversity-related field Proven relevant experience working in a museum preferably as a curator with a demonstrated track record of competence and success Research experience in a biodiversity-related field including integrated taxonomy as well as proven academic research and writing ability Computer literacy in MS Office Valid driver’s licence.

ADVANCEMENT DEPARTMENT

 

COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

Basic Salary Range: R315 600 – R426 948 per annum, plus benefits

Requirements: Degree / Diploma in Communication Proven relevant experience working in a Marketing & Communications environment which includes experience at mid-management level Specific experience in dealing with media and developing media strategies as well as events management would be an advantage Advanced computer literacy in MS Office Valid driver’s licence.

Key Responsibilities include: Assisting the Marketing & Communications Manager in consulting relevant internal and external stakeholders and drafting an integrated Marketing & Communications strategy for Iziko Supporting the Marketing & Communications Manager in the implementation of an integrated Marketing & Communications Plan and related campaignsFulfilling the role of managing editor of Iziko E-news, including copywriting, compiling submissions and production Planning and coordinating all media communication Writing and editing media related communications including all press releases and articles Creating content for specific publications aimed at the media and public as well as across various platforms including social media, Iziko website, podcasts and more Proactively compiling all media communication, including press releases and packs for all Iziko exhibitions, events, programmes and activities as required Coordinating all media launches Managing the maintenance of Iziko’s website Providing input into the conceptual development of promotional material and publications Assisting with copywriting and editing.

HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT

 

PERFORMANCE AND DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR

Basic Salary Range: R233 616 – R316 056 per annum, plus benefits

Requirements: Requirements: Relevant 3- year tertiary qualification in HR Management/ Industrial Psychology or Social Sciences Proven relevant experience in Human Resources Intermediate level computer literacy in MS Office VIP Premier HR Information System or similar Proven experience in working with budgets

Key Responsibilities include: Co-ordinating the annual performance management processes in line with the Performance management policy, including the administration of all related documentation and records • Developing, implementing and maintaining an approved Employee Assistance Programme • Drafting an annual Learning and Development Programme informed by strategic and operational requirements • Implementing the Learning & Development programme ensuring compliance with supply chain procedures and the PFMA • Monitoring the L&D programme implementation and reporting to HR management • Updating and developing procedures for areas of responsibility • Supporting all workplace relations processes including disciplinary interventions and grievances • Analysing HR information to address a variety of workplace issues • Ensuring all monthly, quarterly and annual reporting processes are delivered timeously

HUMAN RESOURCES ASSISTANT

Basic Salary Range: R161 508 – R218 544 per annum, plus benefits

Requirements: Grade 12 A Human Resources Certificate as an added advantage

Proven relevant experience in HR administration which includes leave administration and working on an HRIS system Intermediate to advanced level of computer literacy in MS Office

Key Responsibilities include: Administering the leave function within the organisation Arranging logistics for meetings, training/workshops and interviews Setting up and maintaining accurate HR files, records, and documentation Assisting with day-to-day operations of the various HR functions including the provision of administrative support Drafting and facilitating HR schedules and calendars and capturing employee information onto the HRIS system

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

 

ART EDUCATOR

Basic Salary Range: R270 312 – R365 772 per annum, plus benefits

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree / Diploma in Education with a Fine Arts qualification as an added advantage SACE registration At least two years proven relevant experience in Education Familiarity with Art Collection and related museums or heritage Materials development and programme presentation experience Computer literacy in MS Office A valid driver’s licence.

Key Responsibilities include: Initiating, developing and promoting Art collections-based education resources and programmes Planning and presenting heritage education programmes Preparing lessons and developing or utilising displays and visual aids Maintaining accurate records of education programmes and inventory of resources Planning and designing external education programmes Participating in community outreach, teacher and audience development programmes Developing new programmes and interpretations of Art collections Developing focused education programmes and learning support material based on the public understanding of fine arts, design, architecture, cultural studies and art history Contributing to the development of educational content on the Iziko website and other relevant sites.

Competencies Required: Strong command of the English language (written and verbal), Afrikaans and isiXhosa Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders Attention to detail.

 


 

BASIC SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salaries quoted above do not include benefits. Iziko benefits comprise generous contributions towards a designated retirement fund (compulsory), a designated medical aid (voluntary) and a housing subsidy (voluntary). Other employment conditions such as working hours and leave entitlement are also generous.
