An exhibition featuring the photographs of Rizqua Barnes @The Iziko BO-Kaap Museum
The exhibition curated by Annelize Kotze and photographer Rizqua Barnes, captures the instant in the life of a Muslim bride as she experiences the powerful and emotional transition in the moment of the send-off in a wedding of the Cape Malay community, to become a wife. It speaks of traditions and cultures which are not necessarily practiced today, but which holds families together, embraces new family, and celebrates the beauty of love.
The photographs, by Barnes, have been juxtaposed with historical images to illustrate how Cape Malay wedding traditions have changed through time. The images are in black and white to express the magnitude of the emotion shared between two families, and the Muslim bride who embraces her transition in her moment of the send-off.
