Museums are the link to the past that enables us to address current issues and help to plan for the future. Similarly museum exhibitions and collections are the connections between the past, present and future. Museums also have a responsibility to ensure that its offerings are inclusive and relevant.
Everything a museum does is ultimately for its surrounding communities and the communities that are represented in its collections and exhibitions. To understand their needs and concerns is critical in order to provide them with a successful and inclusive museum experience. Museums can balance the voices in their exhibitions and the views represented by their collections through involving these communities in their work.
This discussion will focus on the value of community engagement in relation to exhibitions and museum objects of especially Khoe and San objects, and the importance of striving towards decolonising the museum space.
