THE BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE – WEDNESDAY 14 JUNE

VISIT THE BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE, NEAR TYGERBERG HOSPITAL

WEDNESDAY 14 JUNE 10:00 -12:00

Join the Friends for a tour of the Stellenbosch University Biomedical Research Institute, which is situated near Tygerberg Hospital. This brand-new institute is a world-class future focused research complex.

The institute houses leading South African researchers and students who are investigating diseases that have the greatest impact on Africa in order to translate their discoveries into improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of illnesses such as tuberculosis, cardio-metabolic disease, HIV, diabetes and neurological disorders.

This state-of-the-art building is fitted with a fully-automated biorepository (BiOS) – the first in the southern hemisphere – which stores three to five million samples at -80°C. The institute also houses three modern BSL3 facilities. These three laboratories are equipped with specialised equipment for working with dangerous pathogens that enable researchers to conduct world-class infectious disease research.

Apart from a range of research laboratories, the BMRI is also host to a bioinformatics hub, electron microscopy labs, proteomics labs, a medical morphology learning centre, the sun skill laboratory and a clinical research unit.

Our visit starts with a discussion of the institute from a scientific and green four-star building point of view. This will be followed by a visit to the clinical anatomy and bone sections.
