Join the Friends on a conducted tour of the National Library of South Africa, 5 Queen Victoria Street, with Najwa Hendrickse, Chief Librarian in the Information Access Services Programme. Najwa will introduce some of the interesting material that is hidden, but accessible. This includes the reference section, reading room and special collections.
We will then go on to the Centre for the Book, diagonally across the road, for a tour with Nelisa Lunika. The Centre for the Book is an outreach unit of the National Library of South Africa. Its mission is to promote a culture of reading, writing and publishing in local languages and easy access to books for all. The Centre for the Book was opened as the University of Good Hope’s headquarters, and, whilst the university no longer exists, this annexe of the National Library is too beautiful not to visit. The gorgeous domed atrium of the central reading room is the venue for concerts and is often hired for weddings – the podium lends itself to ceremonies, whilst the hall is perfect for receptions.
