Iziko South African Museum Offers Complimentary Multi-Site Access During Upgrades

25/06/2026

For media images and interview requests, please contact: Zikhona Jafta at mediaofficer@iziko.org.za

The Iziko South African Museum is currently undergoing essential maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. These works are vital for the long-term upkeep of our facilities and to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all visitors and staff. While some areas of the Iziko South African Museum are temporarily closed for maintenance, there is still plenty to see, do and enjoy.

The following exhibition halls at the ISAM are all still open and fully accessible: The Power of Rock Art, Home Coming, Sea and Us, Gaisphere, The Art of Science, Tata Madiba, Humanity and Bees.

Upcoming Youth Month & Holiday Programme of Events

Celebrate Youth Month and the upcoming winter break with our exciting line-up of activities at the Iziko South African Museum and across our sites:

  • Zip Zap Circus Workshop (29 June – 3 July 2026): Get ready to fly, flip and flourish this holiday season with Iziko Museums of South Africa and Zip Zap Circus.
  • Iziko Careers Workshop (7–9 July 2026): Explore Museum Careers with Iziko Museums of South Africa. Join this three-day careers workshop open to Grade 9–12 learners who wish to explore career options within museums.
  • Iziko’s School Holiday Programmes (13–16 July 2026): Consist of a series of fun, exciting, and enriching art, science, history, and planetarium workshops.

The ISAM Café remains open and will continue operating as normal.

We recognise that this maintenance may temporarily limit access to certain areas of the museum, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation. To ensure that our visitors still have a full cultural experience, we are pleased to offer a multi-site admission concession. Effective immediately, any patron who purchases a ticket or makes a booking for the Iziko South African Museum will receive complimentary access to one of three additional Iziko heritage sites.

While we work to improve our main facility, we invite our guests to explore the diverse art and history available at our other locations. During this maintenance period, your Iziko South African Museum ticket will also grant you admission to one of the following sites:

  • The Iziko South African National Gallery: Located nearby in the Company’s Gardens, this gallery houses an extensive collection of historic, modern, and contemporary art.
  • The Iziko Slave Lodge: Situated at the corner of Wale and Adderley Streets, this site focuses on the history of human rights and the legacy of slavery in South Africa.
  • The Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum: Located in the historic Bo-Kaap, this museum showcases the vibrant cultural and socio-political heritage of the local community.

Please note that certain wings or exhibitions within the Iziko South African Museum may experience temporary closures or limited access during this period. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and greatly appreciate your understanding as we complete these necessary upgrades.

This multi-site concession is effective immediately and will remain in place for the duration of the current maintenance phase. To access the additional sites, visitors only need to present their valid Iziko South African Museum booking confirmation or physical ticket at the entrance of the National Gallery, Slave Lodge, or Bo-Kaap Museum. Bookings can be made online or purchased directly at the museum admissions desks.
