TUESDAY 4 APRIL 10:00–11:30
Due to the popularity of this outing, we are pleased to give you another opportunity to join the Friends on a walking tour of the Intaka Island. Situated in the Century City area, this award-winning 16 hectare wetland and bird sanctuary is home to approximately 177 species of indigenous fynbos plants and 120 bird species.
Intaka – which means ‘bird’ in Xhosa – is a unique example of nature conservation and urban development co-existing in harmony. Apart from its environmental significance, the area offers a place of solace to take a stroll, relax, and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
An experienced field ranger will take us around the various stations, giving added information about the inhabitants and different plant life along the way. They will identify the birds and give us information on breeding habits and other unique insights into this very special island.
At the conclusion of the tour, Siegi Juhnke, Friends member and professional tourist guide, will give us a brief introduction of the historical development of Century City. This will include some of the geomorphological features on which the decision to include Intaka Island into the development was based.
