South African institutions housing natural science collections are fundamentally entrusted by government and tax payers to take care of the country’s natural heritage.

However, for the broader scientific community, in South Africa and globally, the value of natural science collections for scientific research is not widely recognised.

In an effort to increase the understanding and appreciation of natural science collections in South Africa a survey was distributed to members of the scientific community that use this resource. The rationale of that survey and subsequent publication of its results was to assist in demonstrating the value of this important resource to policy makers to lobby for support and funding for the long-term upkeep of the institutions that house these collections. Dr Terry Reynolds will be presenting the findings of this study.
