‘Displacement’ narrates the story of land appropriation and displacement in Palestine. Iziko Museums of South Africa in partnership with the Yasser Arafat Foundation and Museum, hosted the exhibition entitled: ‘Displacement’ at the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum.
The exhibition narrates the story of land appropriation and displacement in Palestine. This offering vividly portrays the broader struggle for self-determination and justice experienced by Palestinians today, and calls attention to many of the issues experienced in the Gaza conflict.
The exhibition Displacement honours the enduring legacy of resistance against oppression. It reaffirms South Africa’s commitment to standing in solidarity with ALL who fight for freedom, justice and equality. Nelson Mandela, the father of our nation, articulated with profound clarity:
“We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians” (4 December 1997).
The Palestinian struggle echoes South Africa’s painful history of racial segregation and oppression.
Apartheid’s brutal policies resulted in the forceful removal and displacement of black South Africans from their ancestral lands, homes, and communities.
This indelible scar is etched into the very fabric of our national memory. Similarly, the Israeli occupation of Palestine since 1948 has led to the violent displacement and dispossession of millions of Palestinians, fundamentally altering their homeland and way of life. This occupation has unleashed extensive human rights abuses, deep-seated trauma, loss of life,
continuously soaring unemployment, restricted access to land and essential services, and pervasive poverty.
The exhibition will run at the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum from 9 August 2024 until March 31, 2025.
The exhibition is the culmination of the collaborative efforts by Lynn Abrahams and Annelize Kotze, Social History Curators, Iziko Museums of South Africa and Mamdouh Froukh, Curator, Yasser Arafat Museum. The Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 until 16:00.
