Hemelliggaam or The Attempt To Be Here Now is a long-term project by the artists Tommaso Fiscaletti and Nic Grobler.
The project is exploring the existential aspects of the human–environment–astronomy relationship with a contemporary perspective.
‘Hemelliggaam or The Attempt To Be Here Now explores the almost mystical relationship that binds mankind to the heavens from multiple perspectives: from the point where, lifting one’s gaze over the horizon, the sky begins above the known world, to a point far beyond, where the curious eye of man, carried by science, has taken it. And when science is not enough, the power of fantasy attempts to transport it into a dimension that goes beyond knowledge.’ – Filippo Maggia, Curator
The photographic and video installation inside the Iziko South African Museum will be introduced by a complementary selection of 20 photographs installed between the trees of the Company’s Garden. The project is a growing archive, Chapter One is the first exhibition of a work in progress.
The project is contributing to the Roadmap for the History of Astronomy in South Africa, promoted by the National Research Foundation (NRF).
