The Iziko Slave Lodge has several galleries that explore the history of slavery at the Cape. Built in 1679, the original building was used to confine men, women and children transported – mainly by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) – as slaves to the Cape during the 17th and 18th centuries. These unwilling immigrants have contributed to the richness and diversity of South Africa’s history, heritage and culture.
