Media images and interview requests, please contact: Zikhona Jafta at mediaofficer@iziko.org.za

In celebration of Women’s Day, Iziko Museums of South Africa is hosting an inter-generational virtual dialogue, titled Women in Conversation, on Sunday, 9 August 2020 at 15h00. Under the umbrella of the global Generation Equality campaign, this dialogue contributes to an international focus on collective change-makers, across all ages and genders, in tackling the continued fight for women empowerment.

Featured speakers in Women in Conversation include Ms Hlengiwe Lucia Ochan and Ms Christina Nomdo.  Ochan served as Mrs Africa Globe, and was also awarded the ‘Inspirational Woman of the Year’ award at the 4th Annual Sunrise Women’s Awards – both in 2019. Ochan is the owner of the OT Deyo Med Aesthetic Clinic, Founder and Patron of the Lucia O Foundation, and is an active participant on numerous councils and chambers within the South African community.

Nomdo serves as the Western Cape Children’s Commissioner, and formerly served as the children rights specialist commissioner on the National Planning Commission (NPC). During her time with the NPC, Nomdo conducted a child participation initiative where children from across all nine provinces provided feedback about how the National Development Plan should be implemented – essentially giving voice to South Africa’s children.

This Women’s Day, celebrate today’s women and reflect on those who marched to the Union buildings in protest against unjust pass laws in 1956 – contributing both to the fight against apartheid and laying the foundations for the realisation of women’s rights. Iziko hopes this inter-generational dialogue will generate a necessary conversation for South Africans to reflect on the successes of women, as well as the many issues that continue to affect women and children today.
