Iziko’s Woman’s Day programme comprises of several events at the South African Museum, National Gallery as well as the Slave Lodge.
Candid Conversations about gender, womanhood and equality will take place at the Iziko South African National Gallery and the Slave Lodge. The event begins at ISANG at 10:30am and ends at the Iziko Slave Lodge in the courtyard at 1:30pm. Join SWEAT, the SistaazHood and photographer Robert A. Hamblin, for a candid conversation on Sex-Work & Trans Advocacy. The event, is in the ‘InterseXion’ exhibition – centered within Hamblin’s photographic images, voice and video installations pertaining to sex work in South Africa – in particular work with transgender women (male to female) who sell sex.
The discussion will be facilitated by Prof Yaliwe Clarke and includes storytelling and perspectives by Angeline de Bruin (SWEAT), SistaazHood/Sisonke and Gender Dynamix. Members of the SistaazHood will be available in the ‘InterseXion’ exhibition space, for a free-flow ‘ask a sex-worker + booth’ session. Both the exhibition curator, Ingrid Masondo, as well as the artist, Robert Hamblin will be present to engage with public about the exhibition.
The group will then move from ISANG to the Iziko Slave Lodge and will kick off an introduction to the exhibition: ‘I am what I am, curated by Lynn Abrahams. One of the participants will then share her personal journey. The two exhibitions ‘I am what I am’ and ‘InterseXion’ both form part of the discourse on sex-work, gender, transgender and heterosexual-LGBTIQ dynamics around social norms, roles and social conditioning versus the reality. These two exhibitions fulfill one of Iziko Museums’ missions, that of museums being spaces for contestation and representative of all.
Woman’s day is also International day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Iziko and the Supusupu Khoe Language Project will host a full day programme from 10am until 4pm. The prorgamme will take place in the Iziko South African Museum.
